Social economic impact

The transfer of innovation to a new field of application will always have direct and indirect socio-economic impacts.

In our specific case, the Applicants are convinced that the successful completion of the proposed research will have important impact on the industrial robot sector and in general on the many end users sectors that extensively uses robot in their manufacturing process. The project therefore will contribute to maintain or increase the today European industry position in the world market, with social impact on employment, not only quantitatively, but also qualitatively through the accompanying training and skill development needed to use and apply the new technologies. The project will help industrial enterprises to recognise the embedded system as one of the most advanced technological engine and to diffuse its applicability in the design practice in the industrial automation process.
It should also be noted that the extensive use of new control and embedded technology from industrial robots to others service applications (such as unmanned intervention in risk environments) will not only increase the conceptual and physical commonalties with consumers robots (with important potential impact on the related market), but also increase the capabilities for the suppliers to respond to new engaging specification posed by special societal needs for service robot.
Moreover it is expected that the success of the projects will have potential high impact on the manufacturing for mechanically based products, by extending the use of robots from high volume to lower volume products, shifting manufacturing operation to robots from other machining tools, reducing the portion of manual works.

The chosen class of products is such that the success of the project will have important impacts not only in that specific class, but on all the manufacturing systems (via its diffusion and substitution potentialities).

An important indirect effect expected from the project – by showing the high potentialities of an optimal embedment in the design of electronics and ICT - is to contribute to change the prevailing design approach and culture in manufacturing industries.
As a by-product, the project will in general have impact on the engineering design approach for products having a relevant mechanical base, pushing for a deeper integration of mechanical engineering and electronics and ITC technologies.
